7 Sets of Metallurgical Overhead Cranes for an Indian Steel Plant

2026-10-19 13:40:45
Project Background

To expand its production capacity, an Indian steel enterprise required the construction of a modern steelmaking facility, encompassing converter smelting, refining, and continuous casting processes. The new facility imposed specific performance requirements for its core lifting equipment: a main hoisting capacity of 100 tons to handle the lifting and tilting of molten steel ladles, supplemented by a 30-ton auxiliary hoist to support tasks such as equipment maintenance and the handling of auxiliary materials. After evaluating several crane manufacturers, the client selected Weihua to supply seven metallurgical overhead cranes for the new facility.

Project Challenges

The construction of a new facility necessitated the synchronization of crane specifications with civil engineering structures and process layouts, requiring precise alignment regarding equipment dimensions, wheel loads, and installation interfaces. A 100/30-ton dual-hook configuration represents a heavy-duty application in metallurgical overhead cranes; the main hook is dedicated to handling molten steel ladles, while the auxiliary hook serves secondary operational needs. Both hoisting systems had to be efficiently arranged within a limited space while maintaining the necessary safety redundancy for each. Furthermore, differences between Indian and Chinese power grid standards, combined with the high-temperature, dust-laden environment of the steelmaking area, required specialized adaptations in the equipment’s electrical configuration and protective design.

Solution

Tailored to the specific operational conditions of the new facility, Weihua provided seven 100/30-ton metallurgical overhead cranes. Featuring a double-girder design, the main hoisting mechanism is rated for A7 duty, meeting the demands of high-frequency, heavy-load, and continuous operation in a steelmaking workshop. The main hoisting system is equipped with dual brakes, utilizes key electrical components from international brands, and features power supply and control systems adapted to Indian grid standards.

In terms of structural design, Weihua implemented lightweight optimization for these cranes. This effectively reduced the overall equipment weight and wheel loads, thereby easing the load requirements for the facility’s steel structure and lowering the total construction costs of the plant. The electrical room is equipped with an independent cooling system to withstand the consistently high-temperature environment of the steelmaking area. An anti-sway and precision positioning system ensures the stability of the ladle during transport, reducing the time required for alignment and minimizing safety risks. The inclusion of a 30-ton auxiliary hoisting mechanism allows the crane to be used flexibly for equipment maintenance and the transport of auxiliary materials when it is not being used to carry molten metal, thereby enhancing the overall utilization rate of the overhead crane.

Project Significance

This project represents another bulk order for Weihua in the Indian metallurgical crane sector, underscoring the client’s confidence in the company’s advanced manufacturing technology and robust product quality. As India’s steel industry undergoes a phase of capacity expansion and equipment upgrades, new steel mill projects are increasingly demanding higher standards for high-temperature resistance, safety redundancy, and seamless installation integration in their lifting equipment. Leveraging its mature 100/30-ton metallurgical crane design and an established local service network in India, Weihua has gained valuable, replicable delivery experience that can be applied to future projects of a similar nature.
